Q: I am a man in my senior years with some small brown spots on my forehead. I have heard of skin peels to treat them. Would you recommend those?

TO: Hi sir! As you suggest, this is probably sun damage. Even non-sun worshippers, like you, build this up throughout your life, despite your best efforts.

A medium-depth chemical skin peel or laser treatments can minimize this, but I recommend going to a dermatologist for either procedure, as you want to rule out any possibility that your blemishes are early skin cancers first.

Consultant dermatologist Anjali Mahto of Self London (selflondon.com) is one such doctor, recommending BBL (broadband light), a laser-like treatment that fires controlled energy into the skin to break up pigmented spots and calm redness as ‘probably the top option’.

It doesn’t really hurt and your patches will peel off and fade significantly over time. You will likely need at least three sessions, four weeks apart.

At Self these are £800 each but, outside of London, BBL or IPL (which is similar to BBL) treatments can start as low as £200.

But again, choose a dermatologist to evaluate and treat you. It’s worth the extra expense for your safety!
