Anthony Martial slams Jose Mourinho for publicly criticizing his screenings at Man United

“It is not necessary to say it to everyone … it can touch you”: Anthony Martial blows his former manager Jose Mourinho for publicly criticizing his performances in Manchester United

  • Jose Mourinho initially showed confidence in Anthony Martial when he arrived in 2016
  • Martial had a hard time with a boss who often knocked him out
  • Martial says that Mourinho’s words motivated him but were not really necessary

Anthony Martial has revealed that he was more motivated than ever to prove Jose Mourinho wrong during a test time under the former boss of Manchester United.

Martial played two and a half seasons with Mourinho from 2016 to 2018 before the Portuguese boss was fired.

Mourinho initially had faith in Martial, but after making 18 Premier League starts in the 2016-17 campaign, the French attacker barely got a glimpse into the following season after the arrival of Romelu Lukaku.

Martial often came in for criticism from Mourinho during press conferences and post-match interviews.

Mourinho said last year: “He [Martial] is a boy with a different personality. What I can say is that I hope he reaches a level that is proportional to his real potential. ”

In an interview with the French broadcaster RMC Sport, Martial said while he was motivated to do better, he did not appreciate Mourinho’s public attacks on him.

Solskjaer has spoken of Martial as a “vital player” for what he needs at Manchester United

He said: ‘It is true that I would have preferred it if he had told me directly, it is not necessary to say it to everyone. Then you definitely want to prove to him that he is wrong.

“He didn’t start me during the first few games and every time I came, I scored. Finally he said to me “you see, now you understand what I wanted”.

‘It can touch you. You just want to show him that you deserve to stand on the field. “

Martial has since returned to the United team under current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer indeed spoke earlier this season about the importance of Martial for the team.

“Anthony is an important player for us,” said Solskjaer about the 24-year-old, who scored eight goals in 19 top performances in this period.
