“I just said yes! I said yes and he told me now it’s up to you to show me [that you deserve it] every time you are on the field. ‘

Martial previously wore No. 9 before being given to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the club.

It was then returned to Martial last summer, and the 24-year-old is enjoying his best campaign for the Old Trafford club.

Solskjaer is pleased with the striker’s progress and said this week, “He is definitely developing, improving and enjoying his football.”

“I think he stepped it up this season, as an individual and more as a team player, as well as physically.

“I remember there were talks that our forwards were the least active last season and some statistics were flying around, but Anthony is now working very hard for the team and he is a quality quality finisher.”

Martial showed his class in the 2-2 draw against Southampton and scored a sensational goal after striking in from the left.

He will be looking to add to his game as United face Crystal Palace on Thursday evening.

They remain on par with Leicester on points, but are fifth on goal difference.
