Dr. Anthony Fauci was charged tonight with lying under oath about his knowledge of research into dangerous viruses in China, which are feared to have caused the pandemic.
DailyMail.com can reveal that Senator Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland last week calling for an investigation into whether 82-year-old Dr Fauci committed perjury when testifying in front of a Senate committee. in 2021.
In a showdown with Republicans, including Senator Paul, in July of that year, Dr. Fauci testified that his ex “has never funded and now does not fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”
Dr. Fauci was the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) until the end of 2022 and was responsible for approving research grants.
Still newly published emails dated February 1, 2020, shows that Fauci acknowledged that “scientists at Wuhan University are known to have been working on gain-of-function experiments to determine the molecular mechanisms associated with bat viruses adapting to human infection, and the outbreak originated in Wuhan.”
Perjury is a federal crime that carries up to five years in prison. While the emails show that Fauci was aware of her gain-of-function in the lab, she never admitted that the NIH funded it.
But the Government Accountability Office (GAO) determined last month that the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Wuhan University received funding from the NIH, Sen Paul said in his letter to AG Garland.

On July 13, 2023, the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic released emails sent by Dr. Fauci about a conference call on the origins of Covid attended by Dr. Fauci, Dr. Francis Collins, former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, and other researchers
In an email, Dr. Fauci admits that scientists were concerned that Covid might have been genetically modified and that this was made worse by the fact that gain-of-function research was taking place in Wuhan before the pandemic.
Gain-of-function research is medical research that genetically alters a virus to make it more deadly or infectious to try to get ahead of natural mutations that might occur.
At the July hearing, Fauci “stated that the NIH has never funded and now does not fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Paul said on the committee chamber.
‘And yet, the gain-of-function research was conducted entirely at the Wuhan Institute by Dr Shi [Zhengli] and it was funded by the NIH,’ he said.
Paul then cited the WIV scientists’ paper titled “The discovery of a rich gene pool of bat SARS-related coronaviruses provides new insights into the origin of the SARS coronavirus.”
The document specifically talks about ongoing efforts to produce a ‘chimeric’ coronavirus, meaning that it has been altered by man, also known as ‘gain of function’.
It also details, Paul noted, that the NIH was a source of funding for that research.

Senator Rand Paul had a heated exchange with Dr. Anthony Fauci at a hearing in July 2021 when he again pressed the nation’s top immunologist on whether the US was funding gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Fauci responded: ‘You don’t know what you’re talking about’

Paul gave Fauci the opportunity to retract his May 11 statement stating that the US Fauci, knowing that it is a crime to lie to Congress, wishes to retract his statement?

Fauci got quite animated during the exchange, as he pointed the finger at Paul for being a “liar.”

Pointing back with his pencil, Paul insisted that the evidence shows that National Institutes of Health funds went to the Wuhan lab, which he says used that money to investigate how to make a bat coronavirus transmissible to humans. humans and more infectious and deadly.
Paul claimed that the research recorded in the paper “explicitly matches the definition of gain-of-function research.”
“This role was judged by qualified personnel from top to bottom of the network as no gain of feature,” Fauci insisted.
But recently released emails show Fauci referring to research by Wuhan University scientists as “gain-of-function experiments.”
Dr. Shi Zhengli, also known as the ‘bat lady’, a leading virologist at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, spent years researching bat coronaviruses with the goal of identifying those with the potential to infect people.
Both she and Beijing itself have vehemently and publicly denied the possibility that Covid could have arisen from the experiments carried out in the laboratory.
Dr. Zhengli graduated from Wuhan University in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in genetics and received her master’s degree from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in 1990.
Last month, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) determined that the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Wuhan University received funding from the NIH, Sen Paul said in his letter to AG Garland.
It said: ‘The report noted that NIH funded the WIV project “Understanding the risk of bat coronavirus emergence” and included “genetic experiments to combine naturally occurring bat coronaviruses with SARS and MERS viruses, resulting in strains of hybridized coronaviruses.
“GAO also found that NIH funded Wuhan University’s collaboration with WIV on viral detection in Yunnan province.”
DailyMail.com has reached out to Fauci via NIAID for comment.
As a former head of the NIH, Fauci presided over the allocation of taxpayer-funded grants for virus enhancement research at the WIV years before the pandemic began.
A federal watchdog found that the NIH “did not effectively monitor” those experiments or check whether they involved pathogens with pandemic risk.
But there has yet been no direct evidence of a natural or synthetic origin, leaving officials divided on the issue.
The Department of Energy, the FBI and various government committees believe the virus leaked from a laboratory, pointing to a series of coincidences and indirect evidence.
The WIV, one of the world’s leading bat virus centers, is located at the epicenter of the original Covid outbreak and suffered several infection control and security breaches prior to the pandemic.
The lab housed viruses considered the closest known relatives of Covid, and their research involved genetically engineering different strains to see how they would infect humans.
However, several other intelligence agencies maintain that the virus was transferred from animals to humans in a natural contagion event.
Natural origin advocates point to an early cluster of cases in an animal slaughter market just eight miles from the WIV, where animals known to harbor Covid, such as raccoon dogs, hedgehogs and rats, were kept in squalid conditions.
