Anthony Albanese has thrown cold water on the idea of a new public holiday to celebrate Australia’s historic Olympic gold medal win.
The prime minister was questioned on Thursday morning about whether there would be a day off to celebrate the country’s unprecedented sporting success at the Paris Games.
Sunrise presenter Matt Shirvington, who competed at the 2000 Sydney Games, asked Albanese: “Is there a public holiday planned? Could this be the new date for Australia Day?”
However, the Labour leader’s response is likely to disappoint workers across the country.
“I think his days off are for negotiating with his management,” Albanese told the programme.
He added: “There are certainly a lot of Australians who will be quite tired after the last few weeks because they have been so committed to our athletes.”
Australian athletes have made Olympic history with 18 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals, bringing the total to 41 medals as of Thursday morning.
