Albanese, 60, told The Kyle and Jackie O show on Wednesday that he gave Jodie a diamond ring after enjoying dinner on Valentine’s Day.

‘In the morning he picked roses from the rose garden. Later we went out to dinner at a restaurant in Canberra and had two courses,” she explained.

“We returned to the hostel and I took out a bottle of champagne and glasses on one of the balconies overlooking the garden.”

Albanese said he then pulled the ring box out from under his seat and proposed to Jodie.

“We sat down and I told her I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her and I asked her to marry me and she said yes pretty quickly.”

Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson then asked him how he was able to secretly get the ring.

“My security team is very discreet and they didn’t write it in my diary,” Albanese said before revealing that he bought the ring from Cerrone in Leichhardt.

The Prime Minister shared the news of his engagement on Instagram last Thursday, making him the first Australian leader to get engaged while in office.

In a joint statement, the couple said: “We are thrilled and excited to share this news and look forward to spending the rest of our lives together.”

“We are very lucky to have found each other.”

During his tenure, she has been by his side every step of the way, earning the nickname “Australia’s First Lady” as she accompanies him to international events and joins him on the world stage.

Colleagues, including Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Claire O’Neil, showered the newly engaged couple with praise and good wishes.

The once-divorced prime minister met Haydon in early 2020 at a conference in Melbourne where the then-opposition leader was speaking.

Albanese asked the crowd if there were any other South Sydney fans present and financial worker Ms Haydon, who lives in her electorate of Grayndler, shouted: “Up with the Rabbitohs.”

He later introduced himself and they decided to go for a drink when they got back to Sydney.
