A senior Coalition MP has slammed Anthony Albanese’s immigration plan as “a complete disaster” and said the numbers are too high.

Speaking on ABC Insiders On Sunday morning, opposition immigration spokesman Dan Tehan said that under the Labor government, 1.6 million migrants will arrive in Australia over four years.

Host David Speers asked him if 1.6 million is too high (the figure comes from a budget forecast) and what Australia’s immigration intake should be.

‘Well, I can tell you what it shouldn’t be. “It shouldn’t be as high as it is today,” Mr Tehan responded.

Speers asked again how high immigration should be and the Victorian MP also did not respond.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese (right) is pictured with Jodie Belyea, who won the by-election in the Victorian seat of Dunkley on Saturday.

‘Well, obviously we will have to wait and see and we will announce it in the run-up to the next election. We have to wait and see what happens with this government.

‘Then we can figure out, okay, what we need to do. But I can tell you it’s too high: 1.6 million people are coming to this country in four years.’

Tehan said this amounted to Adelaide’s population being added to Australia in that period and this should not be allowed to happen.

“When we have a housing crisis, when we have a rental crisis, when people can’t go see a doctor,” he said.

“When we’ve seen cuts to our infrastructure, so roads aren’t built to serve that population, that’s too high.”

The member for Wannon said Australia needs “a proper plan on immigration and setting out what it should be like”.

“(But) what we have seen from the Labor Party is a complete disaster when it comes to immigration, whether it is the detainees or these 1.6 million people arriving without a plan, it is a complete disaster,” he said. .

Speers again attempted to pin Mr Tehan down on the Coalition’s migration plan.

Speaking on ABC’s Insiders on Sunday morning, Tehan said that under the Labor government, 1.6 million migrants will arrive in Australia over a four-year period. A welcome to Sydney sign at Sydney Airport

‘What is appropriate?’ she asked.

“We will announce all that in the run-up to the next election,” Mr Tehan responded.

The ABC presenter then tried once again to get a figure from Mr Tehan, telling him that “if 1.6 million is too much, is 1.5 million okay?”

“No, look, I told you that 1.5 million is not right,” said the Coalition spokesman.

“They won’t announce my immigration policy to you today, but I can tell your viewers that we consider it too high.”
