A 45-year-old man has been charged with murder following the discovery of a woman’s body at a Melbourne waste management facility.

English teacher Annette Brennan, 67, was found dead at a landfill site in Epping, north of Melbourne, about 8 kilometres from her home in Coolaroo, on July 3.

The 45-year-old man, who police said was known to Ms Brennan, was arrested and questioned by detectives before being charged on Tuesday night.

Cooper Street Landfill staff located the teacher’s body while hauling green waste last Wednesday and contacted police.

Investigators believe Ms Brennan was originally inside a household rubbish bin that was collected from her Hilgay Street home on 2 July.

The accused, from Coolaroo, has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

One of Ms Brennan’s former students, Simona Croce, told 9News the teacher was a “beautiful, caring and kind woman”.

“She was amazing, I’m really surprised,” she added, calling her a “second mom.”

“No one deserves to be treated this way, no one,” he said.

One resident told Daily Mail Australia that her neighbourhood was left in shock following the alleged murder.

“We’ve never seen anything like this here. It’s horrible,” the man said.

Forensic and uniformed personnel were seen at the house surrounded by police tape on Saturday when the discovery was made public.

Detectives are interested in speaking to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious behaviour in Coolaroo from June 23 to July 2.

The discovery of the body marks the third time a woman’s remains have been found in a dumpster or landfill in Victoria in recent years.

In March, the remains of 35-year-old Point Cook resident Chaithanya ‘Swetha’ Madhagani were discovered in a rubbish bin in Buckley, southwest of Geelong.

Three years ago, the remains of mother Ju ‘Kelly’ Zhang were found in a landfill in Wollert.

Ms Brennan is believed to be the 48th woman to be murdered in Australia this year.
