Anneka Rice breaks her silence as the Anneka reboot challenge is pulled from the streams

Date:

Anneka Rice broke her silence following a Channel 5 rerun of Anneka’s Challenge which was temporarily pulled from the TV schedules after just two episodes.

The presenter, 64, took to Twitter on Tuesday to share a snap with her voiceover man Dave, joking: ‘Hey Dave. We have 24 hours to find a new home.

The revived entertainment show, hosted by host Anneka, returned to screens earlier this month nearly 30 years after the original show ended.

However, the TV channel, at only two episodes in, decided to reschedule the show to air at a later date after struggling in the ratings war over the desired time slot.

A Channel 5 spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘The first episode of Challenge Anneka enjoyed 1.25m / 10% viewers, but Saturday evenings are always very competitive, especially at this time of year.

The public and critical reaction to the return of Anneka’s Challenge has been amazing and we’ve decided to keep the two remaining shows and reschedule them soon.

The latest episode of Anneka’s Challenge is said to have drawn a disappointing 400,000 viewers, according to the sun.

This is a huge contrast to the likes of ITV’s Saturday Night Takeaway which garnered 4m viewers, while Starstruck garnered 2.2m viewers in the same time slot.

While the first two episodes aired on Saturdays at 8.30pm, this week’s installment will be replaced by royal documentaries, with Zara & Mike: The People’s Royals showing at 8.30pm.

This will be followed next by Fergie & Meghan: Inconvenient Royals at 9:30 p.m.

The Channel 5 reboot aims to take on the challenges faced by contemporary Brits and shine a spotlight on the ordinary heroes.

The original programme, first broadcast in 1989, saw Anneka work to create a congregation for orphaned seals in two days, help organize a party for children in need and plan the conversion of two bunks for disabled residents.

She returned for two ITV specials in 2006 and 2007.

In the last year before the show returned, Annika explained how she wanted to “raise the flag for women today” with her return to television.

Hopefully, the relaunched show will help challenge stereotypes about gender roles on television, just as her original lead-in show did.

Discussing Aneka’s challenge predecessor, Treasure Hunt, she said, ‘It puts women in control right at the center of the action that drives the narrative.

“It really changed the face of television and in a lot of ways, and I kind of want to raise the flag for women today.”

She said: 40 years ago, you have to remember where women were placed in television.

“They were usually either draped over cars as a prize in a quiz game or they were behind a news desk.”

I feel like they did 30 years ago, but there’s likely to be more conversations about how we look, or about how we approach that, while the guys see through and do that, and their image and brand stay connected.”
