Anne-Marie Duff has revealed that for each new role, she showers at the specific time she thinks the character would, as well as choosing the perfect perfume.

The Shameless actress, 53, has had a glittering career on both stage and screen, winning a BAFTA for Irish comedy Bad Sisters.

But Anne-Marie has admitted she is superstitious and with each different role she has certain rituals she must carry out to ensure everything goes to plan.

“I have my rituals,” she told Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett On the Waitrose Dish Podcast on Tuesday. ‘I’ll say something like, ‘I do this at this time,’ and ‘I do that at this time.’

‘There are small obsessive-compulsive behaviors that are… they are actually rituals, superstitions, right?

‘I know exactly what time I have to shower before a show and it depends on the character.’

Anne-Marie also said that she chooses a perfume that matches each character to ensure she smells like she thinks they would smell.

Her confession comes ahead of the return next Wednesday of her Channel 4 drama Suspect, for which she was seen filming dramatic scenes in November.

Anne-Marie and her co-star Dominic Cooper could be seen fighting as they filmed the dramatic scenes on a small fishing boat on the Thames.

They were both wrapped in thick padded coats as Dominic’s character forced his hand over Anne-Marie’s mouth to stifle her screams.

And despite the dark themes, both actors appeared in good spirits between scenes and chatted with the crew.

Anne-Marie reprises her role as psychotherapist Dr. Susannah Newman, and Dominic makes his debut as her mysterious new client, Jon Fallow.

The second season follows Susannah, who is now on a desperate quest to track down a confessed serial killer before he kills again.

But when a mysterious new client admits under hypnosis that he’s a killer and intends to kill another young woman that night, Susannah knows he must be stopped.

Ben Miller also reprises his role with other new additions alongside Dominic including Tamzin Greig, Eddie Marsan and Gina McKee.

Actress Anne-Marie said: ‘I’m really excited to be returning to Suspect so I can delve deeper into the character of Dr Susannah Newman.’

“Expect plenty of twists, surprises and revelations, and more questions to be answered. I can’t wait for viewers to see what we’ve done with season two.”

Anne-Marie also said she chooses a perfume to match each character to ensure she smells like she thinks they would smell (pictured in 2018).

Meanwhile, Channel 4’s Ben Wadey said: “We’re delighted to be working with Eagle Eye Drama again to bring Suspect back for a second series.”

‘With the return of Anne-Marie Duff as Dr Susannah Newman and a truly spectacular cast including Dominic Cooper, Tamsin Greig and Eddie Marsan, Channel 4 viewers are really in for a treat when this comes to our screens.’

The first season of Suspect aired earlier this year with James Nesbitt leading the cast as veteran detective Danny Frater.
