Thanks to games like Florence, gorogoa, and What’s left of Edith Finch, Annapurna Interactive has steadily become one of the most exciting indie game publishers. And at its first showcase event, the publisher showed that much more is in the works. In less than 30 minutes, Annapurna revealed some exciting new partnerships and showcased upcoming games that cover everything from being a cat to hunting demons in the sky. Here’s everything that was shown.
strayed turns you into a cyberpunk cat
The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the debut gameplay trailer for strayed, a game set in a sort of forgotten cyberpunk city where you play as a lost cat. It looks like a great action-adventure game, albeit one where you can hug robots and scratch a couch. The launch is scheduled for early 2022 on PlayStation and Steam.
The artful escape gets a release date and star-studded cast
Wonderful musical adventure The artful escape sends players on a “psychedelic, multidimensional journey” with lots of great guitar riffs. It also has a great cast: the game will feature voice work from the likes of Michael Johnston, Caroline Kinley, Lena Headey, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Strong, and Carl Weathers. It launches on September 9 on Xbox and PC.
Narrator let you build your own story
One of the brand new announcements was: Narrator, which is a bit of a puzzle game where the goal is to create a story. You get a theme, characters, locations, and other narrative elements, which you can then mix and match using what appears to be a very intuitive drag-and-drop system. It’s listed as “coming soon” for both the Switch and Steam.
The Outer Wilderness gets an extension
The Mysterious Sci-Fi Adventure The Outer Wilderness is about to get even bigger: an extension called Echoes of the eye, will be launched on September 28. The trailer is delightfully cryptic, so it looks like fans will have to wait to see what it’s really all about.
A closer look at neon white
neon white seems to be quite the starting point Donut County creator Ben Esposito. It’s described as a blazing fast first-person shooter “about eradicating demons in the sky”, and the new gameplay trailer gives a better idea of what that really means. It is expected to launch on Switch and PC later this year.
solar axis coming in October
The team behind Hyper Light Drifter returns with another wonderful action game, and now we know when it will be released. solar axis is out on October 26 on PC and PlayStation.
A memoir blue explores memory
Another new announcement A memoir blue is described as “a gripping story of a mother and daughter, experienced through cherished memories and repressed memories.” It currently doesn’t have a release date, but it’s coming to a huge number of platforms.
A gameplay trailer for Shallow
The next release of Blendo seems to make the world of immersive sims a little weirder. The sci-fi game is about “sneaking, undermining and sabotaging, all without wearing shoes,” according to the developer. You can get an idea of what that means in the gameplay trailer above.
Some new collaborations
In addition to new games, Annapurna also announced publishing deals with a quartet of exciting developers. That also applies to Jessica Mak, best known for the musical games Sound Shapes and Daily Shooter, as well as horror studio No Code and Falcons Age developer Outerloop Games. The publisher is also collaborating with a new team called Ivy Road, led by Stanley likeness creator Davey Wreden and Karla Zimonja, formerly of Went home developer Fullbright.
Old games, new platforms
Some of the publisher’s more popular games are also coming to new platforms in the near future. Both Telling lies and gorogoa come to Xbox Game Pass, the toadless one coming to Steam on November 16, I’m dead coming to Xbox and PlayStation on August 9, and Edith Finch will switch to mobile with an iOS port on August 16.
