The New York Yankees crumbled to a terrible 8-7 loss to the Miami Marlins on Sunday, receiving another major dent in their playoff hopes and sparking fury in the fanbase over the roles of general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone.

The Yankees led 7-3 going into the final inning – and 7-1 in the sixth – but the Marlins tied Clay Holmes and beat Tommy Kahnle. The Yankees are now five games behind the last AL wild card spot and are on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

It doesn’t get any easier either. The team will then travel to Atlanta for a three-game series against the Braves – who currently have the best record in MLB.

But Sunday’s loss had already caused turmoil in the Yankees fanbase and heightened scrutiny of Cashman and Boone’s positions.

Many fans have taken to social media to call on the two to leave the organization – and it comes days after reports suggested Boone could leave at the end of the season, but Cashman won’t.

One fan called for the team to completely rebuild for 2024, saying, “The Yankees need to clean up for 2024 and for God’s sake get Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman as far away from my team as possible.”

Another said: ‘Anybody saying fire Boone, I agree, but let’s not give Brian Cashman a pass. He is the REAL problem, it is his roster that he created.

But a different fan felt more disappointment with Boone than with Cashman, saying: “Don’t let the fact that Brian Cashman has done a terrible job building this roster obscures the absolute fact that Aaron Boone is a bad manager. “

A different fan addressed Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner saying, “How do Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman still have jobs?” Hal has no desire to win as long as the money keeps rolling in.

For his part, Boone tried not to dwell on his team throwing away a win.

“It’s a tough way to end the series, but we have to move on,” Boone said. “We know we have to rack up wins and as hard as this one is to swallow, you have to move on.”

But star man and Yankees captain Aaron Judge – usually extremely measured speaking to the media – admitted the sting defeat.

“Anytime you lose it’s tough, especially in the situation we’re in where every game matters and every game is so important,” Judge said.

“Maybe when the season is over, every time it ends, you can think about games like this, but we have to move on.” This one sucks here, especially with the lead we had.

‘It’s hard. You have to tip your hat once in a while. We have to show tomorrow. We must learn from it.

Pitcher Holmes also admitted the loss could prove significant.

The mountain gets bigger with every loss,” Holmes said. “We need to put together some wins and string them together and build momentum.”
