Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is planning to disappoint King Charles by condemning his favorite team to relegation just days after mingling with the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace.
Postecoglou, the club’s director of football Scott Munn and Charli Grant of the Spurs women’s team were among prominent Australians living in the United Kingdom invited by the Australian government to attend a palace garden party on Wednesday.
“It was nice, a different experience,” Postecoglou said, although he didn’t know the King was a Burnley fan, who face Tottenham on Saturday and will be relegated from the Premier League if they fail to win.
“That’s probably why they kept him away from me,” the former Celtic manager joked. “I would love to disappoint him on that front. No problem. I didn’t get within 10 feet of the King and if he had approached me, I probably would have asked him about the Parthenon marbles and they probably would have kicked me out.
“It was nice for me and my wife. These are experiences that you’re fortunate to have because of the position I’m in, not necessarily because of who I am. Really inspiring because the people we met there work for charities, great causes, military, people who are true heroes for society.
Ange Postecoglou attended a garden party at Buckinham Palace on Wednesday, but did not have the opportunity to speak to King Charles III.
The King (pictured in 2010 with former Burnley boss Barry Kilby) is a Clarets fan and hopes Spurs do not condemn the team to relegation.
Postecoglou said that if he had spoken to King Charles III he would have asked him about the return of the Parthenon marbles.
‘They know who I am and come to say hello, but just by asking them who they are and their life, you see so many fantastic people doing so much in communities, often without much recognition from the wider public.
‘I could see how happy they were to be there because there was finally recognition for them. Oddly enough, the sun was shining in London, so we had a really nice afternoon.’
Tottenham come into the match against Burnley after four defeats and determined to give their fans something to celebrate at the end of the season.
“Our fans have been incredible this year for us,” Postecoglou said. “They have stuck with us and been a real source of encouragement to the players, both at home and away. Obviously, their experiences have had ups and downs, but they have not given up on their support.
“These last two home games, Saturday and Tuesday, are an opportunity for us to send them into the summer without what we wanted to achieve this year, but with the hope that next year they will be ready to fall behind.” Us again.’
