Ange Postecoglou insists he’d NEVER copy Jose Mourinho’s animated goal celebrations as he believes it wouldn’t help the team – having masterminded his latest Tottenham comeback win

  • Son Heung-min’s 86th-minute goal put Tottenham in the top four
  • Tahith Chong had put Luton ahead before Issa Kabore scored an own goal.
  • Have a free day, Pep! Guardiola’s sermon to Grealish at the Etihad pitch was unnecessary, says Ian Ladyman – everything is beginning

Ange Postecoglou will never copy Jose Mourinho running down the touchline in celebration, and said on Monday that such emotional eruptions are a waste of valuable seconds when he needs to think tactically about what happens next.

The Tottenham boss was calm amid the chaos when Heung-min Son scored in the 86th minute to secure Saturday’s 2-1 win over Luton, and each of their last four home wins has involved them coming from behind.

Postecoglou used that time to plan a substitution, swapping Son for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as they remained in the hunt for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Only Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have scored more points after losing positions this season and Postecoglou said on Monday that the secret to being a comeback expert is to never change your approach, whatever the result. He also insisted that he helps keep calm while everyone else celebrates.

Before heading to West Ham, the 58-year-old Australian said: “If I want the players to have a clear head at the time, it won’t help if I’m jumping and shouting like crazy.”

‘It’s not me. I have learned that throughout my career and in those moments, they may still need me. We scored, made a change immediately and put Pierre on.

“If I’m running down the sideline, thinking we’ve scored and won, I’m not helping the team. That doesn’t mean that internally I’m not running for it. It’s not that I think that’s how it should be. It’s just me as a person. This is the best way for me to cope with what’s happening.

Summer signing Brennan Johnson and January loanee Timo Werner impressed against Luton, their latest comeback win. On the increasing number of comebacks, Postecoglou added: “This has been constant throughout my coaching career. If we go back to the beginning, all my teams had that trademark.

‘Part of that is the game model itself. As simple as it may seem, when you’re so used to playing a certain way, scoring almost becomes irrelevant. Many teams, when they fall behind, have to change their approach. With us, whether we are winning or losing, we will not change.

“Like at the weekend, when we concede a goal, it’s not like the team says, ‘What do we do now?’ What have we been doing”.

Postecoglou turned the tables on a journalist who asked him on Monday if Tottenham feared Manchester United, who are eight points behind them in the table, catching up to challenge them for a Champions League place. “I don’t know,” he said. ‘Can you imagine us challenging Manchester City? No? “They only lead us by eight points.”

Meanwhile, Postecoglou said David Moyes is underrated as West Ham manager, saying: “I rate him very highly.” Longevity means something, especially at this level.’
