Andy Lee announced his engagement to Rebecca Harding after 10 years together in May.
The 42-year-old comedian revealed that while it took him a long time to pop the question, he had been thinking about it for a while and knew he would eventually do it.
“I knew for a long time that I wanted to marry Bec,” he tells this week’s edition of Stellar Magazine.
“I think it was about six or eight months later that I really started thinking about it. I think I’d known about it for years.”
Andy said there was some pressure – and hesitation – from loved ones to get on the knee.
“People kept saying to me, ‘It’s about time.’ And then there was the occasional, ‘Well, I thought you’d never do it.'”
In the joint interview, Rebecca admitted that she wondered if it would ever happen and was “shocked” when the time came.
“We dated for 10 years, so I thought maybe marriage wasn’t for us. There was enough going on in our lives that I knew he was serious about me,” she told the magazine.

Hamish said he was overjoyed and that he and his wife Zoe Foster Blake were “in tears” with joy at the news.

Andy and Rebecca, who are currently undertaking a $5 million renovation project after purchasing a historic mansion in Melbourne’s east, went to their “new old house” under the pretext that they needed to film videos for social media before starting construction.
While pretending to take something out of the marble fireplace, Andy was on his knees when he pulled out a napkin that symbolized how they met.
Andy and Rebecca met in 2014 at a Melbourne cafe where she was working as a waitress. The TV presenter ended up leaving her his email address on a napkin and the rest is history.
“When I was there, I got down on one knee and gave her another napkin, because when I met her at the cafe, I wrote my details on a napkin, and I gave her another napkin,” Lee said of the proposal.
In the joint interview, Rebecca admitted that she wondered if it would ever happen and was “shocked” when the time came.
Rebecca and Andy went public with their relationship at the 2015 Australian Open.
In 2022, the couple confirmed that they had briefly split for six months in 2016 after Rebecca felt “immense pressure” dating someone in the public eye.
However, they soon realized that they were destined to be together during their time apart.
For years, rumors have circulated about the couple’s possible engagement.
In February, Andy was forced to reassure viewers of The Hundred that he had not secretly married his long-time girlfriend.
Andy made the announcement while responding to a joke from his co-star Tom Gleeson, who mentioned his much-publicized love life.
—Andy has something to announce. He just ran away! —said Tom.
“I mean, we’d been dating for 10 years, so I thought maybe getting married wasn’t for us. There was enough going on in our lives that I knew he was serious about me,” she told the magazine.
“Stay until the end of the show, if that’s the case… It’s not the case,” Andy replied.
In 2019, radio host Fifi Box questioned their relationship status after the station received an email from a publicist referring to the couple as “Andy and his fiancée Bec”.
A month earlier, former Today show host Georgie Gardner had also attempted to get a definitive answer about the couple’s personal situation.
“My God, Andy. She’s got wife material. I’m just saying, she’s got wife material,” she told Andy, who was a guest on the show.
The comedian responded: “Has my mom been texting you? What the hell is going on?”
Engagement rumors resurfaced in 2020 when Andy posted a photo of Rebecca hiding her left hand while celebrating her 30th birthday.
“Is there a ring she’s hiding up her left sleeve?” wrote one eagle-eyed follower, eager to see if the couple was about to share some exciting news.
