The comedian is spending a whopping $5 million to restore the palatial home to its former glory.

New photos of the property show the progress of the residence, with the facade dismantled and uneven tiles on the roof.

The land has been cleared, the grass has been cut, and the muddy area around the house has been leveled.

Fences are erected around the property as work continues, and barren trees and bushes are cordoned off.

In the front there are machinery stands, including an excavator and a trailer to transport the garbage accumulated in the mansion.

The patio overlooks a canal, which is currently fenced and reinforced with green mesh supports.

“Today I checked to see if there was any hidden treasure in the ceiling,” he wrote alongside a picture of himself climbing a ladder.

Andy explained why the couple decided to celebrate Christmas at the mansion, which is in a prime location overlooking the Yarra River.

“We said, ‘You’ve looked at this place for 30 years in this (dilapidated) state, so if you’ve never been there, come see it. It will be your last chance to see it in this state before the possums and the rats and the pigeons are evicted,'” he said.

“I’m worried that they (possums, rats and pigeons) might have squatters’ rights since they’ve been there so long.”

He added that he warned guests that the house currently has no running water, electricity or sanitation.

Images uploaded to Andy’s social media show that the huge two-story property is in an advanced state of disrepair.

This comes after Andy and Rebecca gained council approval for their development application in June last year.

Plans for the site include adding a second building that will be connected by a tunnel to the original Italian mansion, which was built around 1876.

Other highlights planned for the 1,950 square meter site include: a home cinema, a gym, a swimming pool and a ‘mega bedroom’.

In a statement to the Herald Sun, Boroondara Council confirmed it had issued a decision notice to grant planning permission for the Yarra Grove address.
