Tens of thousands of glamorous racegoers have descended on the gates of Royal Randwick ahead of the start of Sydney’s richest race.
Billed as the “world’s richest turf race”, the 2024 Everest at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney’s eastern suburbs is expected to attract almost 50,000 punters.
In the race itself, 12 of the fastest horses compete over a distance of 1,200 meters for the chance to win the $20,000,000 prize.
Racegoers are expected to devour more than 10,000 cocktail cakes and 14,000 hospitality plates, all washed down with some 500,000 drinks.
Attendees of all ages, who were dressed and equipped for the occasion, began arriving from 10 a.m. to place their bets before the main event at 4:15 p.m.
Some members were even seen running towards the doors, while others were happy to pose for the cameras.
A group of women with headdresses and winter jackets over their dresses appeared waiting patiently at the turnstiles.
But younger racegoers were apparently less concerned about dressing appropriately for the cloudy spring weather.

For general admission there are no formal dress codes to follow, but punters are asked to avoid costumes, tattered clothing and thongs.

Members are expected to adhere to a strict dress code.
For female members, jeans, leggings, parkas, playsuits, duffle coats and “garments that reveal the midriff” are prohibited.
Male members “must wear tailored pants, dress shoes, a collared shirt with tie, and a jacket, sport coat, or blazer.”
Caps with visors, hats and shirts with open or collarless collars are prohibited.

There has been heated speculation that King Charles could put the ‘royalty’ on Royal Randwick by making an appearance at the sold-out event.
However, Saturday is officially billed as a rest day on their Australian tour, as the couple were spotted taking a leisurely stroll in the garden of Admiralty House on Sydney’s north shore.
Along with the $20 million TAB Everest, Saturday will also see the second running of the $5 million King Charles III Stakes and the $2 million The Kosciuszko, all part of Australia’s richest day of racing.
