Mumbai residents were furious over the lavish wedding of billionaire Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, as officials closed off numerous streets in the Indian city to make way for their over-the-top entourage.
Anant, 29, son of India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, and Radhika, 29, are set to tie the knot this afternoon in what some believe will be India’s biggest wedding this year.
Festivities will take place throughout the weekend, and a host of celebrities have flown to the country to celebrate, including John Cena, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra.
But local residents are not happy with the commotion the extravagant, multi-day event has caused, especially after police announced that several roads would be closed to the public for the wedding.
“Due to a public event at Jio World Convention Centre at Bandra Kurla Complex on 5th July and from 12th to 15th July 2024, the following traffic arrangements will be implemented for smooth flow of traffic,” read a tweet from the Mumbai Traffic Police last week, along with a list of roads that would be affected.

Sonam Srivastava, who works in an office right next to the venue where the wedding will take place, said Business Insider which has caused ‘significant disruption’ to his work.
“This situation has forced us to reschedule critical meetings and events with clients planned for these dates,” he said.
“It is alarming that traffic in such a key business district has been brought to a standstill, causing significant inconvenience to businesses, for a private event.”
The Mumbai police email was quickly flooded with angry responses, with people particularly furious that the wedding had been described as a “public event.”
“Is Anant Ambani’s wedding a public event? Why is public life being disrupted for someone’s marriage?” asked one angry user.
“Since when did the government start getting involved in private events?” another agreed.
“When did a private event of an industrialist become a public event? Are all citizens of Mumbai invited to this or just a select few?” someone else wrote.
“Instead of causing inconvenience to the general public, the organisers should have been told to reschedule this for later in the day, perhaps towards the evening.”
But residents in the area were not happy with the commotion the event caused, especially after police announced that several roads would be closed to the public.

A fifth said: “It’s a private event, not a public one. Making the public suffer for a private event, wow!”
‘Shameless bastards! It’s a billionaire’s wedding. Stop bothering the common man.’
Anant’s father, Mukesh, 67, runs Indian oil and telecoms giant Reliance Industries and is worth more than $114 billion.
Radhika also comes from a well-off family, as her father is the CEO of Encore Healthcare.
This lavish wedding will last for three days and is estimated to have cost a staggering $1.2 million. Anant and Radhika appear in 2023
Earlier this month, the couple hosted several lavish pre-wedding events, including a Sangeet where Justin Bieber performed.
In June they also took 1,200 guests on a four-day Mediterranean cruise, hosting parties across Europe with private performances by stars including Katy Perry and the Backstreet Boys.
The lavish wedding will last for three days and is estimated to have cost a staggering $1.2 million. The guest list includes the likes of Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, Ivanka Trump, Bill Gates, David and Victoria Beckham and other industry titans; as well as Bollywood stars, pop stars and prominent politicians.
In the months leading up to the wedding, the couple hosted multiple lavish pre-wedding events.
Earlier this month, they held a party known as ‘Sangeet’ where Justin Bieber performed and was reportedly paid $9 million for it.
In June they also took 1,200 guests on a four-day Mediterranean cruise, hosting parties across Europe with private performances by stars including Katy Perry, Pitbull and the Backstreet Boys.
