NSW Police are investigating reports that a child was left locked in a car in an underground car park at the Sunnyside shopping center in Murwillumbah on Monday (pictured).

Concerned shoppers reported seeing a child locked in a car in a shopping center parking lot, and police are now investigating.

Photos of the boy inside the black Mitsubishi 4WD at the Sunnyside shopping center in Murwillumbah, northern New South Wales, were posted on local social media groups about 5pm on Monday.

The photo appears to show the child in a booster seat in the back seat of the car.

NSW Police confirmed they are investigating the matter and asked anyone with information to come forward.

The vehicle had left the car park when officers arrived, but it is understood police are tracking the owner of the car.

Temperatures reached up to 24C in Murwillumbah on Monday.

It is illegal in the state to leave a child under seven years old in a vehicle unsupervised if it poses a risk to their safety or may cause distress.

More to come.
