Adventurous foodies in China have already created combinations like soy sauce latte, oyster coffee, and coffee-infused rice.
But this trend goes much further and includes a variety of unlikely food combinations enjoyed by people across the country and is known as “dark cuisine” or “hei an liao li.”
The term refers to food and drink combinations that may seem strange or even disgusting, but are often surprisingly appetizing.
In this case, chives are added to the coffee to help balance the bitter taste while also providing an extra crunch.
On a TikTok video Posted in May, Australian content creator and coffee enthusiast @goldenbrown.coffee demonstrates how to make an onion latte from scratch, which has since been viewed over a million times.

In the clip, the content creator explained: ‘This is a viral drink that came straight out of China. So of course a server really has to test it.
Start by cutting the green ends off the fresh chives before dropping the slices into an empty glass.
The content creator then uses a mortar and pestle to crush the “juices” of the chopped scallion, before filling the glass with regular iced coffee, made by combining ice, milk and espresso.
Then “garnish” the drink with more spring onion, before mixing everything together.
The coffee fanatic took a large sip of the mixture before grimacing and announcing, “I can’t even fake any redeeming qualities.” That’s horrible.’
More than 700 people were divided in the comments, with most agreeing they would avoid the drink.
One person wrote: ‘No! Let the spring onion stay in the soup…’ while another said: ‘I love coffee. I love green onions. But this just seems wrong.’
A third joked: ‘You’re going to be so popular with coffee breath *and* onion breath!’
