A popular community club is ‘disappointed’ after neighbours complained about noise coming from the long-established venue.

The Sydney Portugal Community Club, located in an industrial area of Sydney’s inner west suburb of Marrickville, has been hosting events since the early 1990s.

It’s also under a flight path and next to a heavy freight rail line, but some NIMBY locals (not in my backyard) aren’t bothered by the planes, trains and trucks, they just want to complain about the club.

Last week, an unknown person posted flyers in mailboxes urging neighbors to file complaints against the club.

“If you feel the noise from the Sydney Portugal Community Club on Friday night (4pm to 9.15pm) and Sunday (10am to 9.30pm) was excessive, please take a minute to lodge a noise complaint with NSW Liquor and Gaming,” it said.

‘With numerous 12-hour outdoor music events already booked, by getting the club to comply with its noise restrictions now, we hope there will be far less noise disruption in the future.’

Club secretary Jorge Martins said the complaints were “disappointing”.

“We have been doing everything we can to minimize any disruption that may occur,” he said. The Telegraph newspaper.

“We rely on these big events to boost our cash flow. If we couldn’t do that, we would be under a lot of pressure.”

Mr Martins said most events at the club, which can host up to 1,000 people, finish before 10pm.

NSW Music and Night-Time Economy Minister John Graham has been unimpressed with complaints against the Sydney Portugal Community Club.

“What you can hear loud and clear here is a campaign by someone to recruit their neighbours to lodge complaints against an event that took place largely during daylight hours,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Legitimate noise complaints will be dealt with fairly, but a campaign of leaving letters in letterboxes to generate complaints does not seem to be a genuine start.’

NSW Liquor and Gaming confirmed it had received some “complaints from members of the public relating to noise” at the club.

But one local man said the campaign against the club was “ridiculous”.

“Last weekend you could hear the music, but it wasn’t intrusive. It was over in a very reasonable amount of time,” Andy said.

“There are trucks passing through Marrickville because it is an industrial area. The planes that pass through there make more noise and so does the freight train.”

He added that “noise complaints like this kill businesses.”

The houses closest to the club are about 100 meters away.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the Sydney Portugal Community Club for further comment.
