An appliance expert reveals the correct way to use a washing machine and people are baffled

An appliance expert has revealed a “crucial” tip for washing machine owners that could save them “thousands” of dollars.

In a video posted on TikTok, an employee at Kitchener, Ontario-based TA Appliances & Barbecues explains why front-loading washing machine users should leave the door open after washing a load of laundry.

Because the machines provide an airtight seal, opening the door allows air to circulate and ensures any remaining water doesn’t mold, the worker says. says in the clip.

“Any water left inside the unit will just sit there and get moldy and dirty,” the employee says, adding that this measure “helps keep the washer cleaner for longer.”

In response to numerous commenters who said they were aware of the method, the store said it was one of the “most common issues our service team encounters.”

“All machines should be left open. I think it’s just common sense,” one person wrote.

“It’s good to have learned this growing up and I still do today and will carry it with me for the rest of my life,” another added.

Other experts confirmed the damage caused by leaving the door of a machine open after a load, including Alessandro Gazzo of Emily’s Handmaids.

Another business owner backed up the finding when speaking to Houses and gardens.

‘Washing machines are dark, damp places that, without proper ventilation, can be the perfect environment for mold growth,’ said Yessica Bello, owner and lead cleaner at Cleaning Bellohe told the publication in 2023.

‘As a result, your clothes may develop moldy or mildew odors.’

In the clip, several commentators offered some additional advice.
