Our story (Mail Online, October 24) about a little girl who was accidentally stuck with dirty needles in a New York hospital wrongly suggested that the girl might have to wait six months for an HIV test, when modern tests can give an accurate diagnosis a month after a possible infection. . There has never been a case of a person being infected with HIV from a discarded needle and HIV. Furthermore, HIV is no longer a “death sentence” as new treatments mean that today people diagnosed with HIV, if treated early, can expect a near-normal life expectancy.
