An American woman is facing fierce backlash on social media after accusing Brits of butchering a pizza – but was left humiliated after it emerged she had criticized a meal from a world-famous restaurant run by a traditional Naples family.

The woman, known only as @lethalrejection on X, took to the social media platform on October 13 after seeing a post uploaded by one of her followers, who is a nutritionist.

In it mailThe nutritionist attached a photograph of a dish she had ordered during her visit to a L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele restaurant and added: “My favorite food is pizza.”

The Neapolitan-style pizza appeared to be generously topped with a variety of traditional meats and vegetables, including ham, artichoke, mushrooms, olives, tomato and mozzarella.

The pizza in question is from the L’antica Pizzeria da Michele chain, which first originated in Naples in 1870.

Owned by the Condurro family, the pizzeria has since been dubbed by journalists and specialists as ‘the sacred temple of pizza’, where diners can enjoy the ‘best pizza in the world’.

The restaurant even featured in Elizabeth Gilbert’s romance novel, Eat, Pray, Love, and has now expanded to four more locations across Europe, including two in London, one in Manchester and one in Amsterdam.

However, the thought of this style of pizza left a bitter taste in the American woman’s mouth, and she reposted the photo before accusing Brits of being behind the Italian dish.

She wrote: “British ‘people’ are playing fast and loose with what constitutes pizza.”

The woman’s comments sparked brutal responses from both Italians and Brits, with over 400 people criticizing the woman’s “superiority complex”, while one furious Italian left a passive-aggressive community note on her post.

Another American questioned why there were “beans on the pizza,” but was quickly corrected, saying they were actually olives.

One person wrote: ‘It’s a decent pizza.’ Not every pizza has to be deep dish or packed with so much cheddar cheese that it makes your heart stop,” while a second said: “I pray my life never gets so bad that I develop a superiority complex over the food.”

Another said: “This is literally a highly rated Neapolitan pizzeria.” This is what the original pizza looks like,” while a third wrote: “In Naples you’ll find pizza like this.” You know, the place that INVENTED them? Are they playing fast and loose?

An Italian shared: ‘I’m Italian and this is perfectly fine. I think you’re the one who’s never had real pizza hahaha.’

One Brit added: “American ‘people’ when they find out what borrowed cuisine in the country they’re from is really like,” while another said: “I really want to know what you think a pizza should be like.”

However, several people seemed to agree with the American and expressed their distaste for the Neapolitan-style dish.
