Public disorder on the steps of a Melbourne train station has been blamed for major flooding that forced overnight commuters to evacuate.

Melbourne Central and Flagstaff stations were evacuated late on Thursday night after major flooding damaged several platforms.

A man and woman had earlier entered a staircase connecting platforms at Melbourne Central before damaging a water pipe and fire sprinkler, police said.

The flooding caused an automated evacuation at the two stations, causing significant train delays and damage to the metro network.

While it was initially believed the flooding was due to an act of vandalism, Transport Infrastructure Minister Danny Pearson said vision had proven otherwise.

“I have been informed that Metro (Trains) reviewed the CCTV footage and it appears that a couple in love on a staircase dislodged the sprinkler,” he told reporters in parliament.

“Perhaps a staircase is not an appropriate place to meet after dinner.”

Police released security images of the wanted man and woman earlier this week as part of an investigation.
