Fresh from Gov. Ron DeSantis’ lure of political ads in Florida, California’s Democratic leader, Gavin Newsom, is now running full-page newspaper ads in Texas about abortion and guns.
The brazen campaign will fuel speculation that Newsom is presenting his credentials for 2024 as a presidential candidate ready to take the fight to the Republican culture warriors.
In an interview that coincided with the launch, he criticized other members of his party for playing softball with opponents.
The new slate will feature ads in the Austin American Statesman, Houston Chronicle, and El Paso Times.
They targeted Gov. Greg Abbott, who recently said that abortion takes the lives of babies in Texas.
He changes his line to say instead that gun violence is responsible for killing children in California.
If Texas can ban abortion and endanger lives, then California can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives. If Governor Abbott really wants to protect the right to life, we urge him to take California’s lead,” the ad reads.
It comes after Newsom sparked speculation in 2024 with a $105,000 ad buy on Fox News that hit DeSantis, before last week criticizing Washington Democrats’ timidity.

He added that adopting the moral high ground would only make the party so far.
“It’s absolutely true that I prefer to follow that, ‘when they go down, we go up,'” he said, referring to former First Lady Michelle Obama’s philosophy.
“But I also think we will completely miss the moment we are in. The door is open.
“It’s now fair play. The Supreme Court has left the door open.”
To that end, on Friday Newsom is set to sign a gun control law modeled on Texas’ abortion law by allowing citizens to sue anyone who manufactures or sells illegal weapons.
His Florida announcing sounded like a national player.
“I urge all of you who live in Florida to join the fight — or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom,” he said in the Fourth of July ad.
The next week he was in the nation’s capital for a meeting the first lady Jill Biden in the White House.

The country is on its way to achieving pre-kindergarten for all by 2025.
Newsom, 54, used the platform to blast GOP attacks on the critical race theory, at a time when some Democrats have called on Biden to confront his critics more forcefully.

Newsom has had political scraps with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is considered a major challenger to former President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination.

“You guys are all the same,” he said, and asked the questioner to “read the polls, read the polls.” They want me to run.

Read the surveys. Read the polls, Jack. “You guys are all the same,” Biden said.
