American woman is reunited with her Romanian family 25 years after she was kidnapped at birth

An American woman who was abducted at her birth in her native Romania, is reunited with her family after 25 years.

Belle Barbu was born into a low-income family who were falsely informed that she had a heart condition.

They were sent away from the hospital while being “treated” and only a few days later were told that their newborn daughter had died.

But Belle was actually kidnapped and taken to an orphanage for human trafficking where a large sum was paid for her adoption in America.

Now, at the age of 25, she is finally reunited with her biological parents in a tear gathering.

Belle, now living in Washington County, Utah, was encouraged by friends to take a DNA test that traced her origins to India, Israel, and parts of Europe.

One of her friends, who was also adopted from Romania, shared the results with a Facebook group set up to help adopted Romanian children find relatives.

The group has had more than 500 success stories so far and it took only 48 hours to find the biological family of Belle.

She then decided to contact Operation Underground Railroad – a non-profit organization that reunites victims of child trafficking with their biological parents.

ONS was brought in contact with a researcher in Romania who could confirm a DNA match between Belle and her family.

Only then did she discover the true story about why they were divorced at birth.

Belle traveled to Foggia, Italy in November 2019, together with our founder, Tim Ballard, for the reunion.

The moment was captured with the camera when Belle nervously entered a courtyard where her Romanian family had gathered.

Her mother bursts into tears while the couple embraces with dozens of family members watching.

Belle too starts to cry and strokes lovingly over her mother.

She is then introduced to her biological father who pulls her tight for a hug.

Belle then turns to the group and says, “There are many words I want to say and I want to introduce you to my friend and my family.”

Belle’s adoptive mother walks forward and embraces her biological mother.

Spoken afterwards DeseretNews, Belle said: ‘I was literally taken from my parents and I learned a very different life.

“I still don’t know how to thank the Lord for bringing us back together. How did he let that happen? It was such a miracle …

“There is nothing perfect about my story, but it nevertheless came together so perfectly.

“I’ve never cried so deeply in my life as during this trip.”

Belle now plans to return to study in America to study health, business and horse therapy.

She also hopes that her biological family will visit her and advocate the fight against human trafficking.

ONS works with law enforcement in 24 countries to help combat the problem of human trafficking.

Over the past six years, the organization has helped rescue 3,200 victims and arrested more than 1,700 people.

Speaking of Belle’s reunion, Tim Ballard said: “It was extremely emotional – one of the most amazing moments since I started here with US.

“There was so much joy and so many different feelings for every person from Belle to every one of her family from Romania.

‘It comes down to hope and faith and that we can all make a difference in someone’s life forever.

“We would all like to see such reunions.

“We can all play a role in reuniting families who are separated by injustices such as human trafficking.”
