An American living in London has sparked a debate online after pointing out an everyday grocery item for which Americans have no fixed name.
Claire Dinhut, better known as ‘Condiment Claire,’ has over 470,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares her food purchases, recipes, and of course, her favorite condiments.
In a recent video, the half-American, half-French food influencer waxed poetic about the gooseberries she bought at a farmers’ market as she raised the plastic container toward the camera.
‘What would you call this?’ asked Dinhut, 27. “In the UK it’s called a punnet.”

Punnet is a British word for a small basket or container for fruit or vegetables, but it has yet to discover the American equivalent.
‘In the US there is no word. I did an Instagram poll and you [Americans] everyone was very confused,’ he said.
“It was a tray, a basket, a fruit bowl, a fruit box,” she continued, reciting all the names she heard.
Dinhut noted that “in French, it’s a barquette.”
The video has been viewed more than 82,000 times, inspiring dozens of people to share what they call the fruit container in the comments.
Several Americans insisted that “it’s a carton,” while others labeled it everything from a container to a pint.
“I’ve always called it a bin or plastic container,” shared one viewer.
‘A cardboard box, a container, a gooseberry thing,’ someone else added.

Another joked that it’s a “plastic thing to hold fruit in.”
“I literally asked everyone on ig. I can assure you every third person has a different answer hhahhhahq,” Dinhut replied in the comments.
TikTok users from other countries also weighed in.
“In Canada it’s a pint or a quart depending on the size,” explained one Canadian, while another added that it’s also a “basket” in Australia.
A British expat living in the US admitted to calling it a pannett for the past 12 years.
‘You mean no one has known what I’m talking about?’ asked the person. ‘Another word to add to that list…’
The Dinhut video comes a few months after an American influencer and her English boyfriend went viral for sharing the different words they use to describe the same thing.
