The Alabama native wowed judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie with his audition, as well as the story of his difficult childhood on the ABC singing competition series.

‘At the age of 11, my mother was with my stepfather. He was becoming very abusive,’ she said.

“We had to leave McIntosh (Alabama), then everything went sideways, just like that,” he shared in a video package that aired on the show during his audition.

“The lowest part of my life was when my mother and I became homeless and were sleeping on the sidewalk,” he said. “I had just turned 12.”

Harper added: ‘I never thought I’d be able to tell my story to American Idol. It makes me happy just thinking about it.’

After his audition, the judges praised him and also gave him constructive criticism about his singing technique.

“Everything you do singing technically is because you’re 15 years old,” Bryan told him.

“If I could spend an afternoon with you and just be like, ‘Don’t do that anymore,’ like, ‘Don’t do those two things,’ and man, I mean, you’re just…” he continued before. Perry interrupted him.
