American Vanessa O & Rourke, 31, claimed to be a doctor with brain cancer. She has been allowed to stay in the community after she has appealed

A vicious fraud has fooled people into thinking she had brain cancer to cover up her lack of medical knowledge after finding her job in a doctor.

Vanessa O & Rourke, 31, from the United States, is allowed to stay in Australia, despite the fact that our good character test failed after an Administrative College of Appeals last week granted her a bridging visa to release her from detention.

O & # 39; Rourke is the latest in a growing number of cancer fraudsters who make headlines, including Belle Gibson, Alysha Goring and Hanna Dickenson.

Gibson tore thousands off through her fake claims of curing cancer through healthy eating, while Goring and Dickenson deter friends and family from rejoicing in beautiful vacations and buying expensive goods.

O & # 39; Rourke used an extremely dodgy resume to score a job at Medscribe – a private company operating in southeastern Queensland that employs trained people to work with qualified doctors in hospitals.

The American resident had come to Australia on a visitor's visa in 2016 before returning a year later and staying illegal.

She claimed that she was a formally trained physician and that she had completed her studies at Temple University in Pennsylvania to become a brain surgeon.

So coarse was the co-founder that she both herself & # 39; verbally & # 39; as in written communication & # 39; Doctor & # 39; called.

But over time, her employer noticed that R & rourke showed a lack of medical knowledge that could be expected from a trained physician.

She was interrogated by bosses, but told them that she was suffering from brain cancer and that her treatments left her with a number of short-term memory losses that reversed her medical knowledge.

In April 2017, the Queensland police closed after receiving a tip from the US authorities that O&R 39 was a fraud.

She had fled the US when she wanted unrelated theft crimes.

When an American court found her, O & Rourke sent a fax from a QLD resort under the guise of a surgeon who advised that she should stay in Australia for five months to get cancer.

When O & # 39; Rourke was questioned by the Queensland police, she claimed that she was set up by her family and friends & # 39; who had their own agenda & # 39 ;.

The AAT heard that O & Rourke admitted that she had forged the letter in an attempt to avoid returning to the US, but not because she was afraid of justice.

Her ex-partner, an American police officer, had made R & r 39 Rourke fraudulent charged with crimes she hadn't committed, she claimed.

The tribunal also heard that a GoFundMe page was located in the US to raise money for the fake cancer treatment of R & Rourke.

The page claimed that she had studied at Temple University to become a brain surgeon when she was diagnosed with brain cancer.

An article on an American website indicated that R & Rourke had to travel to Australia for a new type of treatment that was not available in the US.

Although the first treatment round had been successful, she reportedly had to pay for the second treatment round

A benefit dinner was even organized to raise money with the GoFundMe page that collected around $ 10,000 for a $ 65,000 goal.

O & # 39; Rourke told the tribunal that the page must have been set up by her ex-partner to help herself and that she had not been convicted of the alleged crime.

She has also scammed a manufacturer of swimming pools and a store for electrical appliances.

O & # 39; Rourke pleaded guilty to the Magistrates & # 39; Court of Maroochydore in 2017 to two counts of forgery and utterances, fraud involving gain or benefit as an employee, two counts of issuing a forged document, and two counts of fraud involving unfairly caused disadvantage.

The appeals tribunal heard that O & # 39; Rourke now took full responsibility for being unfair in the past and that she would never again commit a violation in the future.

According to the Australian character test guidelines, a person will receive a substantial criminal record and will not pass the test if she has been sentenced to 12 months or more.

She was subsequently placed in immigration detention in August last year after unsuccessfully applying for partner visas, which has now been resubmitted.

The man from Cairns told the tribunal that O & Rourke had been struggling in detention and complained that she was from a happy and energetic person to miserable, vulnerable and anxious.

When returning R & R & R 39's visa application to the immigration minister, the tribunal stated that "the very low risk that the applicant presents to the Australian community is acceptable in this case".
