A plane passenger has reignited an old etiquette debate after his seatmate refused to lower the blinds.

On Reddit, the American Airlines passenger showed a photo of a man sitting in a window seat.

While the other blinds around him were closed, the one next to the man was still partially open, letting sunlight into the plane.

“The whole cabin is dark, FA asks him to take down the shade and he says “um no,” the Reddit poster captioned the image.

‘What’s the etiquette here?’ asked.

Users were divided over who was on the right, with some arguing that the window seat takes control while others said to always listen to the flight staff.

“Window seat has window control,” one user commented.

They continued: ‘The middle one has the bulk of both armrests. The hallway has easy exit and “extra” arm and leg room on the hallway side.

‘I doubt the FA asked him to take it down mid-flight. For boarding/departure, for sure, as it helps keep the cabin cool,” wrote another.

‘An FA will ask AA if this is a long-haul international flight to allow people to sleep and minimize jet lag. On a national level, no, they shouldn’t ask,” another shared.

‘However, if for some unknown safety reason an FA asks you to close it and you do not comply, that is a violation of an FAA regulation to comply with crew members’ instructions.

“Etiquette is to follow crew members’ instructions,” declared another. ‘That’s the only label. Everything else is invented.

“I don’t like flying and looking outside helps calm my anxiety,” someone else suggested. “Maybe it’s similar.”

It is not the first time that the blinds have caused a confrontation between passengers.

In March, content creator Umaymah caused a stir after showing an irritating seat passenger on his daytime flight, who turned out to be a boy.

The Dubai-based content creator posted the eight-second clip on TikTok showing her controversial response.

In the video, Umaymah is sitting in her seat on the plane with the blinds up and light coming in.

However, as she sits there, a small hand reaches out from behind the seat in front of her and deftly closes the blind, despite it being the closest window to her seat.

From there, a game of tug-of-war on the blind ensued, with the young man reaching back to close the blind, only for Umaymah to stop him by putting her hand in the way to stop him.

“It’s my window,” she captioned the video, indignant.

“It had ITS OWN WINDOW,” he added.

Users were divided by their reaction when the boy closed the window blind, some agreeing that she has jurisdiction over the window while others felt she should be more lenient because her seatmate was just a girl.
