Amazon's Wheel of Time show has a cast of strangers, suggesting the big ambitions

Amazon is coming Lord of the Rings show may get the most attention around the big-budget fantasy adaptations of the streaming service, but the company has just announced casting for almost all the main characters in its different doorstop fantasy novel show: that of Robert Jordan The wheel of time.

The show announced the cast for the five main characters of the books: Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara and Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor.

The original epic of 15 books from Jordan, in which even the Harry Potter or A song of ice and fire series to be ashamed in number of pages & # 39; s focuses largely on these characters. So these casting announcements are about as important to the Wheel of Time show as the revelation about which actors Harry, Ron and Hermione would play in a Harry Potter adjustment.

The first casting announcement came back a few weeks – Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, a mysterious woman from a group of all-female magic wielders called the Aes Sedai, who serves as a mentor for the young heroes. (She is a kind of Dumbledore, to continue with Harry Potter analogy.) But unlike that announcement, today's casting largely consists of young, relatively unknown actors, who reveals a lot about what Amazon is aiming for this show.

By not investing in big, big stars, Amazon gives the show the chance to grow over time without encountering any Game of Thrones situation. The length and popularity of that series meant that by the last season, Game of Thrones"A-list stars demanded huge payment days. Together with the budget for ballooning, this dynamic ensured that the show became the most expensive series ever made.

With potential for one Wheel of Time run as long as the Game of Thrones Adaptation (even with severe cuts to Jordan's over-inflated novels, there are tons of source material), the fact that Amazon does not want to blast its entire budget on established names is encouraging. It gives fans the benefit of something new – instead of well-known actors with their own prejudices from previous roles, the new cast gets a chance to make a fresh impression like these characters.

There is clearly still a long way to go The wheel of time on screens, and Amazon has yet to announce a release date. But every new piece of news makes it increasingly clear that the show is actually happening, as opposed to a dream of late night fever on FXX.
