Amazon’s New MMO Could Brick Up Nvidia 3090s

The closed beta for Amazon Games’ new MMO New world has been marred by reports that the game has been bricked up Nvidia RTX 3090 graphics cards from some players. In a statement shared Wednesday, Amazon says it has “seen no indication of widespread problems with 3090s,” but will release a patch anyway.

Here’s Amazon’s full statement shared with The edge on Wednesday:

Hundreds of thousands of people played in the New World Closed Beta yesterday, with a total of millions of hours played. We’ve received a few reports from players using high-performance graphics cards and experiencing hardware failures while playing New World.

By default, New World makes DirectX calls as provided by the Windows API. We’ve seen no indication of widespread issues with 3090s, either in beta or during our many months of alpha testing.

The New World Closed Beta is safe to play. To further reassure players, today we will be implementing a patch that limits frames per second on our menu screen. We are grateful for the support New World is getting from players around the world and will continue to listen to their feedback during the beta and beyond.

However, the language in Amazon’s statement does not completely rule out the possibility that the game could cause problems. In particular, the wording “no indication of” widely distributed problems” (emphasis ours) suggests that there could be some issues, and since we don’t know how broadly or narrowly Amazon defines “widespread,” we can’t be sure how many cards the company has identified that it may be affected.

Many of the masonry maps appear to have been manufactured by EVGA, based on reports in a wire on the New world subreddit. And problems with EVGA cards can occur before the beta, as a single player on the New world forums said they had one EVGA card die on them during the game’s alpha and one die during this beta.

EVGA did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but a representative of the company told Windows Central Which “At the moment we are dealing with specific issues, if it is a real confirmed issue, we will inform and inform you in our EVGA Forums on our website.” But if you have a 3090 card of any kind, you may want to wait to play the game until Amazon’s patch is out, just in case.

The New world closed beta runs until August 2. If you want to try it, you can pre-order the game to get an invite or sign up for a chance to access it via this page. The game will be released on August 31 after many delays.
