A landlord has threatened to end a lease if the tenant lets their mother live in a rental property for a week.

The confused tenant turned to an online renters’ group for advice after their landlord said the mother could only stay in the rental for two days.

“My mom is coming to stay with me for a week so I asked my property if it’s okay,” the tenant wrote.

‘My mother travels six hours to my house. The property said no, she can only stay for two nights because she is not on the lease.

‘Is it true? I have never heard of this before or had a problem with any other tenancy I have lived in.’

Under the post, the tenant left the property’s full response, which read: ‘It’s great that your mother is coming, but unfortunately she can only stay at your place for two nights.

“Otherwise you are breaking the contract and your lease will be terminated.”

Several commenters were shocked when the tenant told their landlord about the upcoming visit.

“Why on earth did she even ask?” said one.

“Why is she asking for permission, her mom isn’t going to live there,” wrote another.

“The property cannot control how long guests stay,” said another.

On its website, Tenants Queensland advises: ‘Your tenancy is your home and you have the right to have visitors and guests.

‘However, visitors and guests are not approved to live on site, so they cannot stay too long or it could cause problems.’

The organization recommended that tenants let their landlord know when they have guests visiting.

“If you have plenty of space, this is usually not a problem,” it said.

‘But if you only have a small place, it can lead to problems such as overcrowding or noise problems. You are responsible for the behavior of your visitors or guests.’
