Alonso surprises with career end statements

Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso is already 41 years old and thus by far the oldest driver in the field, but his motivation is as great as on day one. The Spaniard has now explained what goals he still has for himself personally and with Aston Martin and revealed surprising details about the end of his career that was originally planned.

For Fernando Alonso, Formula 1 is currently running to measure. After his move from Alpine to Aston Martin, the podium places just fly to the veteran. The 41-year-old was on the podium in all three races of the season. In the drivers’ standings, he is third with 45 points behind the two superior Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen (69) and Sergio Pérez (54).

The fact that Alonso was still active in the premier class of motorsport at this point was not planned at the beginning of his career, as he now reveals.

Asked in an interview by his sponsor Bang & Olufsen how long he plans to continue driving, the Spaniard said with a smile: “I’d like to know that too.”

Alonso, who made his F1 debut in 2001 in the Minardi, said: “When I started in Formula 1, I wanted to be there for seven or eight years. Then I won the two championships and I thought maybe I will drive another year or two.”

But his two world titles with Renault – 2005 and 2006 – are more than a decade and a half ago.

“Now I have the longest career in Formula 1 behind me and I’m still fresh, still motivated, I still enjoy every single day,” continued Alonso, who now preferred not to commit himself.

Alonso formulates goals for Aston Martin in Formula 1

“So I still have a few years ahead of me and I hope to win a title in the future too,” said the 41-year-old.

At the moment, the Spaniard wants to keep his feet on the ground despite the unexpected high with Aston Martin. The goals are therefore formulated defensively for the time being.

“Of course, a third world title is my goal, but right now it’s all about having a good season. Aston Martin had a lot of problems in 2022, so let’s put it this way – first of all we have to learn to walk properly again, before we run.”

At the moment it’s all about getting to know the new car properly. In order to ultimately fight for the title, the team then has to gradually adapt to each other even better.
