However, McCoist dismissed the 25-year-old’s claims – saying ‘nothing has really changed’ in terms of the schedule.

McCoist actually thinks the current generation of footballers have it easier than those who played in their day, because their teams are “much bigger” and they are paid “much more money”.

speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist said, “You play games. Nothing has changed. There are a few cups and a few internationals.

“I understand and I guess the only difference is the intensity is probably higher, but we’ve played 30 league games for years. There is always a League Cup, always an FA Cup.

“Also the teams are bigger these days, way bigger. You get paid way more money then Marcus [Rashford]Go for it!’.

McCoist’s comments came after Rashford launched the 2022-23 schedule. He highlighted the fact that United played almost every midweek in the first half of the season to host the World Cup in Qatar.

Rashford also explained how the players will continue to push themselves to the “absolute limits” and insisted they need more breaks in the schedule to rest and recover.

The England star said: “To be honest it’s obvious. It’s crazy that we play at club level against teams that play one game a week and we play three a week from November until that we are eliminated from the Europa League.

“It’s difficult and we’re used to it, but I don’t think it’s fair. I’m not the one who should have the answers. If one team plays 60 games per season and another plays 38, there must be some time for the team to play 20 more games.

When discussing the 2023-24 campaign schedule – which will be released on Thursday – Rashford said: “The players are going to push us to the absolute limits. It’s nothing new, it’s not a complaint or a dig, I’m just giving my honest opinion that I don’t think is correct.

“We also need to have more time to recover between different games and at different stages of the season.” I don’t think it’s up to the players, we shouldn’t have to talk about something we don’t control. We are not going to make the final decision.
