Fears are growing for experienced hiker Alistair Thomson, who was last heard from more than a week ago.

Fears are growing for an experienced hiker who was last heard from more than a week ago while hiking in remote Central Australia.

Alistair Thomson, 63, was taking the Larapinta Trail alone, heading towards Alice Springs from about 240 kilometers west of the city, NT Police said.

The hiker, from Victoria, had plenty of food and water with him when he last contacted friends and family via text message on May 21.

He was due to arrive at Hugh Gorge on 22 May, but has not been heard from since and has not returned to his hotel.

Police, the Larapinta Trail Trek support team and local rangers are searching for Mr Thomson.

He is 6 feet tall, white, and has light brown hair that is turning gray. She was wearing a wide-brimmed blue hat.
