Alicia went on to say that she had portrayed childbirth on screen four times before experiencing it in real life, adding: “Your job is to pretend as an actress, but every time I had to give birth, I told all the women in the set. “I’m sorry.” I felt like an impostor.”

She opened up about the “painful” struggles she faced on her path to becoming a mother, admitting to The Times that it “took time” for the couple to conceive their first baby together.

“Now we have a son, but it took us a while,” she said, before revealing that she had suffered a “painful and extreme” miscarriage before becoming pregnant with her son.

She also compared her experiences to her 2016 film, The Light Between Oceans, in which she and Michael played a childless couple who suffer two miscarriages and ultimately adopt a girl who is lost at sea.

Alicia added: ‘(The miscarriage) was so extreme, painful to live through and of course it made me remember making that movie (The Light Between Oceans). “That film now has another meaning.”

The Danish Girl star added: “Sometimes you go through difficult things in life and if you have an office job you can step away for a while.”

Leading the arrivals at London’s Roundhouse were Alicia, Saoirse Ronan and Ellie Bamber, who looked sensational in metallic dresses.
