Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez saw the funny side after she was epically trolled by Donald Trump for losing the battle to lead the House Oversight Committee.
Trump shared on Truth Social that it was “really unfortunate” that Ocasio-Cortez was defeated by Gerry Connolly to lead House Democrats on the panel.
“She has to keep trying,” Trump added. “One day she will be successful!”
Ocasio-Cortez held a leadership position on the committee, challenging the more established and senior Democrats expected to get the role.
She lost to 74-year-old Connolly (D-Va.) with the final vote of her Democratic colleagues at 131 to 84. Connolly was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer, with plans to undergo chemotherapy to address it.
Ocasio-Cortez responded to Trump’s post on social media, sharing an image of his response to her own X account.
“Damn, you know it’s bad when even Trump feels sorry for me,” Ocasio-Cortez replied with a laughing/crying emoji.
Ocasio-Cortez continues to look for ways to boost her political profile, especially after Democrats lost the Senate, the House of Representatives and the presidency to newly elected President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress in the 2024 elections.

Although in the minority, the position of chairman of the House Oversight Committee is a prominent one for Democrats looking for ways to make a name for themselves by opposing Trump and holding him and his administration accountable.
But seniority continues to rule in Congress, suggesting the 35-year-old congresswoman will have to wait her turn.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was among Democrats who opposed Ocasio-Cortez’s attempt to leapfrog Connelly as she called on fellow Democrats on his behalf.
Ocasio-Cortez reacted negatively after Trump became president in November, warning her followers that the United States was entering a period of “fascism.”
“I believe that we are in a time when there are, let’s say, colleagues in the history of mass movements of people mobilizing to protect each other in times of fascism and authoritarianism. And this is the era we are about to enter,” she told her followers on Instagram.

She later reflected on the fact that some of her supporters who voted for her also voted for Trump for president instead of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Some of her followers admitted that they voted for Trump because they believed he truly cared about the working class and would bring change to the country as an anti-establishment figure.
“I feel like Trump and you are both real,” one follower wrote simply.
“I feel like you are both outsiders compared to the rest of DC, and less established,” another of her followers wrote.
“I voted for Trump but I like you and Bernie,” wrote another. I don’t trust the politicians of either party.’
Trump won 33 percent of voters in Ocasio-Cortez’s district, a shocking 11-point jump from the 2020 presidential election.
