Aldi shoppers are rushing to snap up a viral £3.49 red wine after it returned to shelves after initially selling out in just four days.

One that sold out in record time in 2023 was the specially selected Cairanne, which sold out in less than a week last year.

Now, it’s making a strong comeback in 2024 at the reduced price of just £3.49, which is a massive 58 per cent discount on its regular price of £8.49.

Anyone looking to get their hands on a bottle will have to be quick though, as the bottle will only be available until Sunday, December 8.

A rich, layered red packed with aromas of berries, plums, black cherries and plums, this Cotes du Rhone wine variety boasts a decadent finish of mocha and spices.

This makes it the perfect accompaniment to festive parties and cozy evenings over the Christmas period.

Last year, wine expert Jane MacQuitty wrote in The Times that the wine was a “present for the nation,” generating much excitement about its return.

‘A red garrigue soil from the southern upper Rhône, with masses of ground black pepper fruit, for just £3.49 instead of £8.99. Set an alert on your calendars.’ she wrote.

An Aldi insider previously revealed to Grocer Magazine that the supermarket was actually “losing money” on the deal due to having to pay VAT and other taxes.

VAT accounted for around 58p for each bottle sold, while alcohol duty added £2.23 or £2.67 per bottle, depending on whether it was purchased before or after the tax rise that came into effect in August of 2023.

The individual said: “Any price below £5 is a very strong promotion, for Aldi to be completely discounted to £3.49 seems out of line with what is needed to drive a profitable category.”

It comes after Co-op and Aldi champagnes beat prestige brands by doubling in price in Christmas testing.

Consumer champion Which one? asked a panel of four wine experts to blind taste a selection of effervescents.

Co-op’s Les Pionniers champagne, which cost £22.75, turned out to be a stopper, scoring 85 per cent and being named Best Buy.

Experts praised its smooth creaminess, pleasant freshness and long, tasty finish.

It was closely followed by Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny Premier Cru champagne priced at £21.99, which received a score of 81 per cent and also picked up a Best Buy award.

The panel said this fizz showcased fresh fruit flavors against a “savory backbone.”

These bottles scored higher than the most expensive champagne the panel tested.

The £47 Brut Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne received a score of 77 per cent.
