Aldi Australia plans to convert a supermarket in a densely populated urban area into a trendy small-scale ‘corner shop’.
The low-cost grocery chain has filed for development with the North Sydney Council on its proposal to convert its existing North Sydney outlet into a brand new concept store in a major turmoil for the supermarket sector.
The smaller store will look different from what shoppers usually expect from a standard Aldi supermarket, with plans to roll out an urban-style outlet with a new layout, a ‘hole in the wall’ cafe, new signage and street art.

“We know Australians are looking for new and convenient shopping experiences, especially in densely populated areas, so we’re exploring a smaller store in North Sydney under a new store concept name: ALDI Corner Store,” an Aldi spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia. .
The North Sydney development application has yet to be approved, so we’ll talk more about this proposal at a later date.

If the proposal goes through, the new corner store at Aldi could compete with the large supermarkets Woolworths Metro and Coles Local, which are smaller retail chains mainly located in urban areas.
The new plans come nearly a year after Aldi opened a new supermarket in Lane Cove on Sydney’s lower north coast – complete with state-of-the-art features and unique Special Buys products.
The modern format store offers ‘better’ product displays, improved navigation, modern interior design, redesigned shelving, expanded wooden production areas and extensive energy-efficient chillers.
