INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — carlos alcaraz defeated Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(4), 6-3 at the BNP Paribas Open on Monday, joining the defending champion Taylor Fritz in the fourth round.
Former NBA players Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash sat front row to watch Alcaraz advance in the southern California desert, where he was a semifinalist a year ago. The 19-year-old from Spain can return to the world No. 1 ranking if he wins the title here.
Fourth seed Fritz defeated Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-2. Fritz served four aces and won 88% of his first serve points against Báez, Argentina’s 30th seed.
“I’m trying to take it like any other tournament, but it’s pretty hard not to know I’m defending a title,” Fritz said. “I’m constantly reminded of it.”

Rune saved a match point and came back from 2-5 down to win the second set tiebreaker. But Wawrinka rallied in the third to send his 19-year-old opponent packing.
“The last 45 minutes were tough,” Wawrinka said. “He had the game under control and was playing well. He was putting a lot of pressure on, he should have won the game much earlier.”
Wawrinka reached the fourth round in Indian Wells for the first time since 2017, when he lost in the final. He turns 38 next month.
“My whole career I only know one way,” Wawrinka said. “Keep fighting, working, making an effort and being positive. I’m super happy with the victory.”
No. 8 Felix Auger-Aliassime avoided the annoying bug and beat francisco cerundolo7-5, 6-4.
In female action, first classified Iga Swiatek beat champion 2019 bianca andreescu6-3, 7-6 (1).
“I’m glad I’ve had the chance to play under pressure a little bit more and see how I’m going to deal with it,” Swiatek said on court.

The final set lasted over an hour, with Raducanu breaking Haddad Maia’s serve to go up 4-3. Raducanu held on the rest of the way and closed it out with his fourth match point. It was his biggest victory over an opponent since his breakthrough at the US Open.
Next up for Raducanu is a fourth round match against Swiatek.
“I’m pretty sure I’ll be tactically ready; my coach is good at tactics so I’m going to trust him,” Swiatek said. “I’m pretty sure I’m in the rhythm now, so I hope to play better every game.”
