Alan Shearer is convinced a rising Euro 2024 star will develop into a “really good striker” in the future, as well as targeting a future move to the Premier League.

Slovenia were beaten by Portugal on penalties in the round of 16 after the smaller teams were held to a goalless draw by Roberto Martinez’s star-studded side.

His resistance ended in a penalty shootout after he missed all three of his attempts.

Despite their elimination from the tournament, Shearer praised the performances of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko at Euro 2024.

The 21-year-old failed to score in four games in Germany but showed glimpses of the ability that led to him being linked with big-money transfers.

Shearer, speaking about the Rest is football podcast, he highlighted Sesko’s ability and tipped him for a future move to the Premier League.

“He was fed scraps most of the time but I think he’ll be a very, very good striker, I’ve got no doubt about that,” Shearer said.

‘A lot of the bigwigs were after Sesko, weren’t they?

“He has signed a new contract with Leipzig, but I don’t think it will be long before we see him in the Premier League.”

Sesko had signed a one-year contract extension ahead of Euro 2024, with his contract now set to run until 2029.

The 21-year-old had attracted significant interest from Premier League clubs before signing his new contract.

Arsenal are believed to have been keen on signing the striker, who scored 18 goals last season.

Chelsea are also said to be interested in the Bundesliga star.

Sesko had missed a key chance in extra time as Slovenia were eliminated in the round of 16 by Portugal.

Gary Lineker agreed with Shearer’s view on Sesko but believes the striker made a mistake when presented with a chance by Portuguese defender Pepe in extra time of the last 16.

“He made the only mistake there, when you’re one-on-one with the goalkeeper what you’ve got to do is try to get the goalkeeper to commit first and he certainly didn’t do that on that particular occasion,” Lineker said.

“But he is a young striker and I think he has shown a lot of potential.”

Sesko was on the pitch during the penalty shoot-out, but was not among the three Slovenian takers.

Slovenia saw all three of their penalties saved by Diogo Costa, whose heroics helped Portugal reach the quarter-finals.
