Airbus will pay a special dividend this year as it capitalizes on rival Boeing’s crisis.

The world’s largest commercial aircraft maker said it will pay an additional 1 euro per share on top of its usual payout of 1.80 euros per share. Its cash reserve has surpassed the £9bn threshold, which is a trigger to return more cash to shareholders.

The French group experienced high demand last year, with 2,094 aircraft ordered, up from 820 in 2022. It expects to deliver around 800 commercial aircraft this year, 65 more than in 2023.

CEO Guillaume Faury said: “We are making progress on our production ramp-up against a backdrop of an operating environment that remains complex and affected by supply chain challenges and geopolitical conflicts, so this is quite an achievement.”

Airbus posted an 11 per cent rise in revenue to £56 billion and a 4 per cent rise in profits to £5 billion.

Archrival Boeing is dealing with its latest crisis after part of a door on a 737 Max came off at 16,000 feet last month.

US authorities have prevented Boeing from increasing production of its 737 Max 10 planes while it investigates manufacturing processes.
