An AirBNB host has revealed a strange new rule she was forced to implement after a group of guests racked up thousands of dollars in electricity bills during their stay.
TikToker Ashley (@built.with.class) shared a story about a guest who stayed for three weeks and left her home in “five-star” condition, but things took a dramatic turn when the electric bill arrived.
“The guest not only installed an electric vehicle station, which is normally expensive, but it is minimal. That guest also mined cryptocurrency,” he said.
The combined energy consumption resulted in a bill of $1,500.
After looking at the outside security camera footage, Ashley said guests “brought 10 different computers” upon arrival.
An AirBNB host has revealed a strange new rule she was forced to implement after a group of guests racked up thousands of dollars in electricity bills during their stay.
Guests set up an electric vehicle station and mined cryptocurrency.
“It was cheaper for them to rent a house to pay for that electricity.”
Because of this experience, the host had to implement a strict new rule prohibiting cryptocurrency mining and electric vehicle charging on his property – a rule he didn’t feel he had to explain to AirBNB users.
To add insult to injury, the host had to fight Airbnb to recover the additional charges.
After handing over the paperwork to the company, the cryptocurrency miners had no choice but to confess their mistakes. But paying the expensive bill was the least of the guests’ worries.
“He was too honest and made over $100,000 in those three weeks, so a $1,500 electric bill was nothing,” Ashley said in the comments.
Users who say they also offer accommodation for AirBNB said in the comments that they also had to enforce the same rule when listing their residence on the app.
One user commented: “My rules also don’t allow cryptocurrency mining. It’s ridiculous that we have to do this.”
Another said: ‘A guy told me he does this with Airbnb and was shocked that he gets away with it.’

Others shared the stories behind the strange rules they had to implement.
“My neighbor has an Airbnb and one time a guy brought his work truck with a HUGE water tank in the back. He filled it up with the outside hose (we have metered water). Huge bill! New rule,” one user said.
“I saw an Airbnb where they had two washers and dryers, a couple moved in to run a laundry service and it increased the water and electricity bill,” said another.
