Victorian Liberal leader Matthew Guy is set to resign after a humiliating attack on Daniel Andrews in the state election.

Mr Guy announced he would not be running as leader again as he congratulated Labor on their election victory on Saturday night.

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all the Liberal and National party candidates, their campaign teams and volunteers for the tireless work they have put in, especially over the past few weeks,” he said on Sunday.

The respectable 3-4 per cent favoring two parties statewide was strongest in the exceptional swings to the Liberal party in Melbourne’s north and west.

This represents a huge future electoral opportunity for the Liberal Party.

‘As soon as it is clear which candidates from the VVD will form the next party chamber, I will call them together to choose their new leadership team. I will not be a candidate for the position of leader.’
