Brownlow medalist Mitchell revealed how he held his golden retriever in his arms when she died in a Melbourne park.

Mitchell added that his new Collingwood teammates tried to help during the ordeal, but nothing could be done when he watched Macy die.

“Many thanks to (ruckman) Darcy Cameron and (former Port Adelaide and Adelaide player) Billy Frampton for their assistance in trying to save her,” he wrote.

Mitchell later thanked his fans for their support in a post to his Stories, saying Nala was “noticeably affected” by the loss.

“Thanks to everyone for their support over the past few days, it means a lot,” he added. “The trauma of what happened will be there for a while.

“Nala has been noticeably affected. She howls at night and stays around the house during the day looking for Macy if anyone has experienced this with a dog before.

“This is what Macy would do now if she were still with us.”

RSPCA Victoria said: ‘Tom, we are so sorry and saddened to hear of your loss.

“Macy couldn’t have been paired with a better human and dog sibling.

“I’m thinking of Macy, yourself, and Nala at this time.”
