- Bomber legend Lloyd believes ‘must give’ to move club forward
- He thinks his old club should make a move for the available Alastair Clarkson
Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd has turned up the heat on Ben Rutten, urging that ‘something must give’ amid a swollen mold of form for the under attack coach this season.
The bombers’ season hit a new low on Friday after falling to their 11th loss this year in an embarrassing defeat to the rocky West Coast, despite starting the game in a buoyant mood after beating St Kilda last week .
Essendon’s latest defeat has led to more calls for the club to bid farewell to Rutten and fans took to social media to express their anger at the coach and his side.

Now Bombers legend Lloyd believes change is needed at the club and he fears his old side is accepting their current situation ‘too much’.
“I honestly think Ben Rutten should be under pressure for his job,” he told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
“I just think, why was Carlton the worst defense in the league under David Teague last year and Michael Voss now has his team in the top four in the space of a pre-season.
“They were torn apart by a team that has struggled to score all year.

As a result, calls for coach Rutten’s resignation have intensified among fans on social media
“I think something has to be done at Essendon.
“You can be too accepting and that’s what I think, they’ve been too accepting right now.”
The three-time Coleman medalist added that a complete top-to-bottom overhaul is needed and the club would be naive not to consider a switch to premiership-winning coach Alastair Clarkson.
‘I want a good review; I want a review for everyone to see what is going wrong at the club and why it has been mediocre for so long,” he said.
“There’s a man there by the name of Alastair Clarkson, looking for a job. Could he be the one waking this football club from its slumber?’
Clarkson is the most wanted name in the AFL, with a number of clubs associated with attempting to coach the mastermind. Footy journalist Caroline Wilson has refused to rule out a collaboration between Clarkson and the Bombers.

She went over Clarko’s options and said: ‘At the beginning of the year there were certainly unofficial talks between the Clarkson camp and the St Kilda camp.
“We have been told that Brett Ratten’s contract extension is almost complete. And then these two disappointing weeks. It’s a mystery.
“I’m not writing it off for GWS, although it’s not the preferred option. You’d think the Gold Coast door would be closing for the next few weeks, especially if they win today.
“And then of course there’s Essendon. I’m not completely writing off Essendon in Alastair Clarkson either. And if all the doors close too, the Tasmanian gang could hold out.
“If they get into the league in 2025. But no, you can’t write St Kilda off, although now it would be a big thing to go back on their word with Brett Ratten. And these are honorable people. I’d be amazed.’
