Former Melbourne star David Schwarz has revealed the withering spray his mother directed at Footy Show host Eddie McGuire after he attacked Sam Newman in retaliation for an infamous incident on live television.
In 2001, Newman hit Schwarz in the face with a cream pie as a mock punishment for his disappointing performance in his 150th AFL game.
The football star reacted angrily, punching Newman in the chest and sending him flying across the set.
The joke was one of The Footy Show’s most controversial moments, and Schwarz has now revealed that his mother called McGuire and gave him both jabs in an exchange so rude it cannot be printed in full.
“When it all happened, you go to a commercial break and they clean up the cake, and it was a lemon meringue pie, because I couldn’t see,” Schwarz told the show. Inspiring stories about sport with Tim Gossage podcast.
‘Sam had hurt his back (when I pushed him) so he had slipped a disc in his back and was in trouble, Ed was furious because he’s a control freak and (fellow panellists) Chris Tarrant and Spida Everitt are sitting there thinking what the hell has just happened.
‘At the end of the show, the producer comes out and says to Ed, ‘Mary Schwarz is on the phone. My mother worked for Victoria Police and, as a single mother and everything she’s been through, she’s as tough as an old pair of desert boots.’
‘Apparently the phone call went like this: She said: “Ed, you have no idea who you’ve just slept with. You’re from Broadmeadows, we’re from Sunbury, we’re going to punch your head in.
“We want a front page apology in the Herald Sun, we want an apology on Channel Nine news and if we don’t get that, look out.”

Schwarz said McGuire offered his angry mother a vacation to calm her down.
-Ed leaves, calm down, Mary. (He says) “We’re going to come and get you, what you did to my son is a disgrace.”
And Ed said, “Mary, I have a trip for two to Bali if you’re interested.”
“So my mom went on a trip to Bali for two and was outraged. She never got an apology, she never got anything like that.”
In 2020, Sam Newman claimed that Schwarz knew the entire prank was a setup and had since “moved on from it.”
Schwarz (pictured right with former Demons teammate Jeff Farmer in 2021) described his mother as “tough as old desert boots”.
“People were hesitant to come in at the end because they thought if they were going to throw a pie in the face of someone like David Schwarz, why would we send our players out to have that happen to them?” Newman told the Sacked: Showbiz podcast.
“I’ve loved being involved in all of that, but it was all absolutely organised and I think David took advantage of that a bit. And I’m not going to trample on him.”
