Adrien Brody has recalled “abandoning his life and his loved ones” while filming his Oscar-winning role in The Pianist so he could “go deeper” into the character.

The actor, 51, won Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 2003 Academy Awards for his role as Holocaust survivor Wladyslaw Szpilman.

Now he’s been nominated again for his role in The Brutalist and has reflected on how much he gave up for his role in the 2002 war drama.

Adrien, then 29 years old, broke up with his girlfriend during filming, lost too much weight and became ill.

‘And when I was young I didn’t feel like I could faithfully honor everything I had on my shoulders with The Pianist, so I dug really deep.

‘I abandoned my life, my loved ones, my house, my phone and my car to be able to deliver the truth. But now it’s less toxic. I don’t think it’s necessary to torment you anymore.

After his big win, Adrien completely disappeared from the spotlight saying he didn’t understand why he had received so much praise for the film.

In the interview he told how he isolated himself in the countryside because “he saw how much was happening to me and he felt nervous.”

It comes after Adrien made headlines earlier this month after winning Best Performance in a Motion Picture for The Brutalist at the 2025 Golden Globes.

Brody stars in The Brutalist as László Tóth, a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who escapes the Holocaust by emigrating to the United States.

Previously nominated for a Golden Globe for his iconic role in The Pianist (2002), for which he also won the Oscar for Best Actor, Brody’s latest project is a historical drama directed and co-written by Brady Corbet.

The film arrived at the Golden Globes with seven nominations, including those for supporting stars Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce.

Brody rose to international fame with his Oscar-winning performance in The Pianist (2002), where he played Polish Jewish pianist Władysław Szpilman, earning critical acclaim and an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Following his breakout role, Brody continued to build an eclectic career, starring in films such as King Kong (2005), The Darjeeling Limited (2007), and Predators (2010).

Adrien was emotional as he paid tribute to his girlfriend Georgina Chapman after winning.

Taking the stage to collect his award, the Oscar winner, 51, expressed his gratitude to his fellow designer, 47, acknowledging her support as well as the tough competition in his category, which included heavyweights like Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Craig, Colman. Domingo, Ralph Fiennes and Sebastián Stan.

“To my beautiful and wonderful partner Georgina, your generosity of spirit, your own resilience and your immense creativity are a daily reminder of how to be,” Brody said, visibly moved.

‘I wouldn’t be here in front of you if it weren’t for you. There was a time, not long ago, when I felt like I might never have this moment again, so thank you.’

Brody and Chapman were first romantically linked in 2019, marking their first relationship since her 2017 split from disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein.

The former couple, who married in 2007, finalized their divorce in 2021 and share two children.

Weinstein, convicted of rape and sexual assault in 2020, was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

He later received an additional 16-year sentence on new charges in California, bringing his total prison term to 39 years.

Chapman, the British fashion designer and co-founder of the Marchesa brand, left Weinstein in October 2017, shortly after The New York Times published an explosive investigation detailing decades of sexual harassment and assault allegations against Weinstein.

Chapman publicly announced their split in a statement, saying she was “heartbroken” by the allegations, but it was clear she wanted to distance herself from the scandal.

Since then she has kept a low profile and focused on her work, including her career in fashion.
